A Living Story Spanning Seven Centuries

Our story

Set in the Chiltern Hills, Hampden House is a rare example of English heritage shaped over 650 years. Rather than being rebuilt, it evolved - layer by layer - through thoughtful additions, restorations, and remodelling. Each century left its mark, creating a rich architectural tapestry where no two rooms are quite the same.

The Hampden Legacy

The house was founded by the Hampden family in the 14th century, with John Hampden I likely building the original stone manor around 1350. Through the Tudor and Georgian periods, the family expanded and reimagined the house in line with the fashion of the times - adding everything from intricate brickwork to a Georgian Gothic façade.

Among the most notable residents was John Hampden VI, known as “The Patriot”, who famously opposed King Charles I over taxation and became a national figure during the English Civil War.

Transformation Through Time

The 18th century saw dramatic stylistic changes at Hampden House, with Robert Trevor, Viscount Hampden, contributing to its grand interiors and elegant landscaped gardens. By the 20th century, the house had taken on many roles - serving as a stately home, a school, and even a film set.

Following a period of disrepair, the house was lovingly restored by Tim and Susie Oliver, and continues to be cared for by the Oliver family today. Now beautifully preserved, Hampden House stands as a living testament to centuries of English history - ready to welcome a new generation of unforgettable moments.
